Specter Validates GOP Fears
Robert Novak comments in this morning's Chicago Sun-Times on the disappointing leadership of Arlen Specter over Bush's judge nominees. Specter decided on his own to put nominee William Myers up first in Congress, as he believes that Myers has the best chance for 60 votes. As Novak points out,
The American Thinker notes Specter's reluctance to challenge the Democrats' filibuster of judicial nominees this way: "By his disproportionate loyalty to the decorum of the Senate and callous indifference to the Constitution, Arlen Specter may prove to be the Democrats’ best friend."
The last outcome the Republican leadership wants would be a filibuster against Myers broken by 60 senators voting for cloture. That precedent would restrict what kind of Bush Supreme Court nominee could get through the Senate.
