UK Moving Further Left?

Despite the fact that Conservatives won 48% of the overall seats in the UK in last week's election, it appears that the government will move even further left than where it was. How can this happen? If one party does not win an all-out majority, then the minority parties can form a coalition, and this looks to be a great possibility now with news that Gordon Brown will resign.

It appears that Labor, who won 40% of the seats, and the Liberal democrats, who won 9%, could team up and get close to a majority (49%). I'm no expert on UK politics but this is what seems to be happening. Under this scenario, the Labor Party, the big loser in this year's election, could retain power.

This is similar to what happened in 2008's Republican Primary when we saw a few occasions where Huckabee and McCain teamed up to defeat Romney. One particularly egregious example was West Virginia where Romney won 48% of the vote, but Huckabee and McCain had won 25% each and combined their votes to take it away.

***UPDATE***
Well, I got this one wrong. Cameron has been named Prime Minister of the UK. What could have happened did not. The big question now, is how much did he have to compromise with the Lib Dems (think Nancy Pelosi and even more left) to get the job? My guess is a lot as the Lib Dems were talking with both and held all the leverage. This new coalition "conservative" government will not look like Thatcher's or Reagan's, but it could have been worse.
