Google: The Lop-sided Democratic Donor

The past couple of months have been an eye-opener for me. I was one of those naive Americans who believed (at least in part) that Google's search results were infallible. In other words, if I searched a news topic, Google would return results that are unbiased and represent both sides of an issue, whether liberal or conservative. I still have not seen a scientific study that shows Google's bias, but there is plenty of anecdotal evidence.

Last week I mentioned the story in which Google rejected an anti-Pelosi ad from Rightmarch.com even though it was identical to an anti-Delay ad (without the name change). Ultimately the firm received so much negative press that it took down the anti-Delay ad as well.

WorldNet Daily has this article that shows Google's overwhelming support for the Democratic party through campaign donations.

With the Internet's No. 1 search engine under fire for playing political favorites with content, a search of Google's political contributions as recorded by the Federal Elections Commission shows a staggering $463,500 went to Democrats in the last three election cycles with a paltry $5,000 going to Republicans.

Granted, political donations by employees of any firm are perfectly legitimate and by themselves, do not imply a political bias for firm policies. But when approximately 99% of employee donations go to one political party, I think it's fair to question whether there might be a cause for bias when there is subjectivity involved (search results are NOT solely determined on an objective basis). Even more interesting last week was a story that Google intends on judging articles by the quality of the source.

At the very least, I hope that people understand that Google's employees have political views that overwhelmingly favor Democrats. Heck, some people still think that CNN and PBS are unbiased sources.

One last comment about Google. Since they own blogger.com, which hosts my blog site, I'm often listed on Google searches, but the same is not true for bloggers who host their own sites.
