Clinton Mistake on Gay Bashing?

One of the most important rules in politics, bashing minorities or gays is strictly forbidden...that is, unless the target is a Republican. In which case, move to the next rule. Arthur Finkelstein, a staunch Republican who has worked on several election campaigns, recently wed his longtime partner in Massachusetts, which allows gay marriage. Bill Clinton used this information to bash Finkelstein after learning that he is organizing an effort to defeat Hillary next year. As the Daily News says, it's time for Clinton to simply be quiet for a little while.

Clinton said that Finkelstein "may be blinded by self-loathing." Hmm. I wonder what Andrew Sullivan has to say on the matter. Well, so far - not much. Based on Sullivan's reasoning during the election, the treatment of gay people overrides all other decisions. I know it's relatively recent news, so I'll give him the benefit of time.

But after listening to Clinton's comment; the comments about Colin Powell being called "Uncle Tom;" Kerry "outing" Dick Cheney's lesbian daughter; and reading the papers during the Condi Rice hearings, the theme could not be more obvious: gay and race bashing is permissable, so long as the target is Republican.
