Colin Powell: Fake Republican

Colin Powell claims to be a Republican. Whether you believe that or not, his advice to the GOP is ludicrous. In his eyes, the GOP needs to become more liberal and promote higher taxes and bigger government. As the WSJ points out:

According to press accounts, Mr. Powell argued that America has changed, and "Americans do want to pay taxes for services" and "Americans are looking for more government in their life, not less."

If the American people want to pay more taxes, nobody seems to have told the Obama Administration. There's a reason that the President ran as a tax cutter and repeats at every opportunity that he's already, in his words, cut taxes for "95% of working families." The appetite for Walter Mondale-style honesty about the consequences of huge spending increases remains low, to judge by the Administration's own rhetoric.

Colin Powell got his dream in the 2008 election, when Republicans nominated the ideal maverick Republican, John McCain. Powell supported Obama anyway. Powell seems like a decent man with a good heart. But let's face it - he screwed up the first Gulf War by not deposing Saddam and then even let him mow down his opposition in the months following the war, he was a failed Secretary of State and was also dishonest enough to allow Scooter Libby to hang while he kept the truth to himself - and he was never a Republican.
